How to Create Balanced Football Teams Using a Simple Player Rating System
Unbalanced teams are one of the fastest ways to ruin a small-sided football game. You have ten, twelve, or fourteen players ready to play, and on paper, splitting them into two teams sounds easy, but anyone who regularly organizes games knows how difficult it can actually be.
Put two of the strongest players together and one team will likely dominate. Separate them, but accidentally put the two best defenders on the same team, and the problem is still the same.
The good news is that you do not need a complicated statistical model to make better teams. A simple player rating system, combined with a little common sense about positions and playing styles, can make weekly games more competitive, and here is a practical way to build one.
Why Balanced Teams Matter in Amateur Football
Competitive balance is one of the most important aspects of amateur football, especially when there is no league table, prize money, or professionals involved. Think about these two very different games.
One finishes 9–1. The weaker team spends most of the match defending, frustration increases, and eventually players stop tracking runners because the result feels inevitable.
Another game finishes 6–5. Both teams have periods when they are ahead, players stay involved until the final minute, and everyone leaves discussing a save, goal, or missed opportunity that could have changed the result.
Most players would choose the second game for a friendly because it feels like you get more out of it, but this does not mean every match needs to finish level. Football is unpredictable, and that is part of what makes it enjoyable.
The organizer’s job is not to guarantee a draw, but to create two teams that have a reasonably equal chance before the game starts.
A player rating system gives you a useful starting point.
Start With a Simple 0–100 Rating
One easy and practical approach is to give every regular player a rating between 0 and 100.
You do not need to use the entire scale. For a typical amateur group, you might end up with players distributed roughly like this:
- 40–49: relatively weak or inexperienced players
- 50–59: below-average players within the group
- 60–69: solid regular players
- 70–79: strong players
- 80+: exceptional players relative to the group
The important phrase here is relative to the group. A rating of 75 does not mean someone is objectively a 75/100 footballer.
It means that, compared with the people they regularly play against, they are one of the stronger players. This distinction makes the system much easier to maintain.
You are not trying to compare your midfielder with a professional footballer. You are simply trying to determine whether your 70-rated player has a greater impact on your weekly game than your 60-rated player.
Do Not Overthink the First Ratings
The hardest part is usually assigning the initial numbers. Organizers often worry that every rating needs to be perfectly accurate before the system can work.
It does not. Start with what you already know.
Imagine a group of twelve regular players. You probably already know who the two strongest players are, who struggles most, and which players are roughly equal.
For example:
Strong: 72–80
Above average: 65–71
Average: 58–64
Developing: 50–57
Then make smaller adjustments within those groups. If two players seem similar but one consistently influences matches more, perhaps one gets 66 and the other 69.
The difference does not need to be scientifically proven, and the goal is to create a useful representation of what everyone in the group already sees on the pitch. After several games, you can adjust the numbers.
Total Rating Is Useful, but It Is Not Everything
Once every player has a rating, the simplest balancing method is to make the total rating of both teams as close as possible.
Suppose you have ten players.
Team A might have ratings of:
76 + 69 + 63 + 58 + 52 = 318
Team B:
73 + 68 + 65 + 60 + 53 = 319
At first glance, that looks almost perfect, and often it will produce a much better game than randomly selecting teams. However, total rating alone has limitations.
Imagine that Team A has three attacking players and no natural defender, while Team B has two defenders and a goalkeeper who is considerably better than anyone on Team A.
The mathematical totals may be equal, but the teams may not feel equal on the pitch. This is where positions become important.
Balance Positions as Well as Ability
The smaller the teams, the more one positional imbalance can affect the match. In 5-a-side, having the only two defensively disciplined players on one team can make a huge difference.
The same applies to goalkeepers. When creating teams, look at both:
Overall ability — represented by your player ratings.
Team structure — whether each team has a reasonable mix of defensive, attacking, creative, and goalkeeping ability.
You do not need rigid positions for every player, and simple categories such as goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, attacker are enough.
If your group rotates positions constantly, you can be even less specific. Just identify players who have particular characteristics that significantly affect balance.
For example, you may want to avoid putting both of your best ball-playing defenders on the same side even if another combination produces a slightly closer total rating. A difference of three rating points between teams with sensible positional balance may produce a better game than mathematically identical teams with poor positional balance.
Treat Goalkeepers Carefully
Goalkeepers deserve special attention. In many amateur groups, some players are happy to play in goal while others strongly prefer not to.
Sometimes there are two dedicated goalkeepers, and sometimes everyone rotates. If you have two regular goalkeepers, the easiest solution is usually to put one on each team and balance the remaining outfield players around them.
If only one strong goalkeeper is available, consider their impact when building the teams. A goalkeeper who repeatedly prevents clear goals can influence the result just as much as a strong striker.
Ignoring that advantage can make a team considerably stronger than its outfield ratings suggest. If everyone rotates in goal, goalkeeper ability matters less.
However, you should still avoid creating a situation where one team has several competent options while nobody on the other side is comfortable in goal.
Consider Playing Styles and Chemistry
Finally, chemistry is another factor that numbers struggle to capture. For example, one player constantly makes runs behind defenders, and another is excellent at finding those runs.
Separately, both might be rated 68, but together, they can create more attacking threat than their combined rating suggests. The opposite can happen too.
Two individually strong players may both want the ball constantly, occupy similar areas, or contribute very little defensively when paired together. This means that you should treat chemistry as a final adjustment.
First create teams using ratings and positions. Then look at the proposed lineups and ask yourself, Is there anything obvious here that the numbers are missing?
If the answer is yes, swap one or two similarly rated players.
Adjust Ratings Gradually
Player ratings should not be permanent because people improve, others lose fitness, and someone returning after six months away may not immediately perform at their previous level. But ratings should not change dramatically after every match either because everyone has unusually good and bad games.
If a 65-rated player scores four goals one evening, that does not automatically make them a 75. Look for patterns over several matches.
If the same player consistently becomes one of the most influential players on the pitch, increase their rating gradually and, likewise, reduce ratings when there is consistent evidence that the current number is too high.
Small adjustments keep the system stable while allowing it to reflect reality.
What About Last-Minute Changes?
This is where organizing weekly football becomes particularly frustrating. You spend time creating two balanced teams, send them to everyone, and then thirty minutes before kick-off someone messages:
“Sorry, can’t make it.”
A replacement joins who has a completely different ability level. Now the teams need to be reconsidered.
With ratings already assigned, this becomes much easier. If a 68-rated player drops out and a 55-rated player replaces them, you immediately know that simply putting the replacement into the same team is likely to create an imbalance.
You can move another player between teams or generate a new combination. The system gives you a framework for making that decision instead of starting again from intuition.
Using Technology to Automate the Process
You can manage a rating system with a spreadsheet or even a simple list on your phone. For a small group, that may be all you need.
The challenge comes when you organize games regularly. You start maintaining player lists, tracking who is available, updating ratings, creating teams, recording results, and repeating the same process every week.

Do Not Chase Perfect Balance
Finally, remember that no rating system can predict exactly what will happen in a football match. A weaker player can have the game of their life.
Your best striker can miss five chances. A goalkeeper can make several extraordinary saves.
One team may communicate better that evening. That unpredictability is a part of the game, not a problem that needs to be eliminated.
The purpose of player ratings is therefore not to manufacture identical teams. It is to avoid obvious mismatches.
Start with simple ratings, keep the team totals reasonably close, distribute important positions fairly, consider goalkeepers and obvious player combinations, and adjust ratings gradually as you learn more.
If both teams walk onto the pitch believing they can win, you have probably done your job. And when nobody can confidently predict which side will win before kick-off, the football usually becomes much more enjoyable for everyone.
