Effective Tips for How to Get Faster For Soccer
Knowing how to get faster in soccer is key for improving your overall performance and standing out on the soccer field. As a soccer player there are two main ways that you can be fast, you can be fast physically or fast mentally, and in this blog post we will be discussing how to improve your physical speed.
When it comes to physical speed there are also two types, how fast you are running with and without the soccer ball. Either way physical speed isn’t just about running faster—it’s about staying injury free, improving athleticism, explosive speed, reaction time, and agility to dominate on the pitch.
Soccer is a very unpredictable game where you have to be fast going in all directions, with and without the ball, not just in a straight line. That is why in this blog post I will be going over some tips on how you can run faster for soccer.
Tips for How to Get Faster for Soccer
Improve Your Athleticism, Running Mechanics, and Arm Techniques
As a footballer, your athleticism is the foundation to your game because the more athletic you are, meaning the more body awareness and coordination you have, the easier it is going to be to control your body and the soccer ball. As a footballer it is very important to focus on training your fascia system, breathing, and improving your running mechanics and arm techniques which are essential to improving your stride length and overall speed.
When it comes to running these are the best tips that I can give you to improve speed
- Improve your body’s biotensegrity via the fascia system
- Improve your body’s ability to create and absorb force
- Improve the spiral characteristics of your body
- Develop a back-chain dominance during gait
- Improve your ability to create stiffness in the right places when running (Ankle stiffness)
- The faster you go the more you are going to have to be on the balls of your feet (on your toes / athletic position)
Practice Speed Exercises and Agility Drills Consistently
Once you have worked on your athleticism and better understand how your glutes and core create power through your feet when walking (and running) it is important to practice running faster. As obvious as this sounds the best way to get faster is to run faster consistently.
Before a soccer training routine, team training, or on a day off from team training you can spend some time working on high intensity speed drills to build explosive speed such as-
- Speed training
- Acceleration drills
- Plyometric exercises
- Soccer flying sprints
- Full speed sprint training
- Speed ladder drills
- Interval training
Focus on Recovery
Balancing intense speed drills like the ones above with proper rest ensures optimal performance and prevents overtraining. This is why when you are doing speed training it is important to take enough recovery periods.
Just as important as all of the work you do on your field, when you are off the field you want to make sure you are prioritizing your recovery, by having at least one rest day per week and prioritizing these parts of recovery daily: sleep, nutrition, hydration, EMF exposure, and mitochondrial function.
Improve your mental Speed
Although I mentioned at the start of this post that this blog was going to be about improving physical speed, which it is, it is also important to go over how mental speed affects your physical speed.
Mental speed plays a crucial role in how effectively you can utilize your physical speed on the field. Quick decision-making, anticipation, and reading the game allow you to react faster, position yourself better, and make movements that maximize your physical abilities. By sharpening your mental speed through activities like visual scanning, game analysis, and situational drills, you can create a seamless connection between your mind and body, giving you a competitive edge in soccer.
Summary
Getting faster in soccer involves improving athleticism, refining running mechanics, and practicing targeted soccer speed drills like fascia training, acceleration drills, and plyometric exercises. In this blog post, I went over a basic guide on how to get faster for soccer.
